HOLLYWOOD, CA – MONDAY, June 30, 2014 - Mance Media, a global film and television distribution company based at Sunset Gower Studios in Hollywood, CA, today formally announces its acquisition of “A LEADING MAN”, the feature debut from LA-based writer-director Steven J. Kung.  The film stars Jack Yang (New Girl, Grey’s Anatomy), Heather Mazur (Matador, Switched At Birth), Kate Miner (The Campaign, Necessary Roughness), and Tsai Chin (Memoirs of a Geisha, Joy Luck Club). It was produced by Justin Bell and Jon Michael Kondrath and executive produced by Pat Tsao and Peggy Tsao.

Mance Media has set a September 12th date for the theatrical run, following a TVOD, iTunes, DVD/Blu-ray release, and a U.S. television premiere thereafter.

The searing drama about Asian actors finding work in Hollywood made its world premiere at the Hawaii International Film Festival in October and made its Los Angeles film festival premiere at the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival where it won a Special Jury Award. It is also an Official Selection of the Austin Film Festival 2013 and Dances With Films 2014.

Synopsis:

When a young and talented Asian American actor is fired from a starring role on a television show, he attempts to salvage his career by entering into a romantic relationship with a successful casting director.

Everyone is happy for rising actor GUOQIAO “GQ” (Jack Yang) – the network, his mother, his best friend – everyone except GQ himself. He’s stuck playing an offensive stereotype on a television sitcom, and the day he decides to speak up for himself on set, the executive producer fires him. Struggling to pick up the pieces, he starts dating A-list casting director RACHEL (Heather Mazur). Love and work are intertwined.

Their relationship survives the protestations of GQ’s mother, PAT (Pat Tsao), and best friend, DAVID (Raymond Lee), but starts to show strain as it becomes clear that GQ is unable to land another acting gig. Frustrated with Rachel’s inability to produce results, GQ takes interest in a celebutante actress (Kate Miner) who tests his ambition and fidelity. As pressures from work, love and family come to a head, GQ must confront the hard question: How much of himself will he compromise for career success?

Quotes

“ It’s an artful film with a cool soul, much like the other films in Mance’s slate,“ says writer-director Steven J. Kung. “I think we’re a great fit.”

“A Leading Man dramatizes racism in Hollywood and the difficulty non-white actors face in getting roles that are outside the stereotypes written for them. I think this is an important issue that is often times overlooked in film and [the story] ties into the overarching conversation of the lure of Hollywood. We are very much looking forward to getting this story out and working with Steven & team,” says Mance Media’s CEO, Matthew Mancinelli.

The deal was negotiated between attorney Clifford Lo on behalf of the filmmakers, and Matthew Mancinelli for Mance Media.
